Harding Theater Revitalization Project seeks to relaunch historic Divisadero theater

Despite having attended a number of shows at The Independent, I'll cop to being more than a little oblivious about the existence of the currently-vacant space next door, let alone the space's legacy as a historic theater. The Harding Theater opened in 1926 and served as a movie theater and performance space until it became a church in the 1970s. The space has been in limbo for almost a decade, but community members are now seizing the reins to revitalize the theater space. The folks behind the Harding Theater Revitalization Project are holding a community forum tonight at THEOFFCENTER (848 [...]

All Your Sisters – "An Awakening"

Jordan Morrison is a recent transplant to Oakland as well as the leader of All Your Sisters. "An Awakening" fuses noisy pop to pulsating synth lines, and if you like classic-sounding post-punk, you'll enjoy this one, as well as a few more from AYS which I've posted below. The band will be at SUB-Mission tonight, and at a house show in Oakland with Some Ember on Wednesday, before heading north on tour. MAY Tour 1 TUE - SAN FRANCISCO, CA - SUB Mission w/Owl Paws 2 WED - OAKLAND, CA - LA SUITE w/Some Ember 4 FRI - EUGENE, OR [...]

Video: Big Tree – "Storm King"

I'm quickly approaching a saturation point with respect to chamber folk, drawn largely from a sense that too many bands are, consciously or not, falling into a paint-by-numbers approach that means a lot of unearned grandiosity. Not so, thankfully, with Big Tree's "Storm King," and the video for the song seizes on the track's fluidity, building something subtle and beautiful until the big sonic payoff. The Berkeley band's latest album, This New Year, is now available on multi-colored vinyl from Soul Step Records, and they'll be performing at Cafe Du Nord on May 16th. Listen to the entire album after [...]

Video Premiere: The Mallard – "Mansion" (Directed by Hannah Lew)

Below, we're excited to the premiere of the new video from SF's The Mallard. "Mansion" comes from Yes on Blood, the band's recent Castle Face full length, and the video was directed by Hannah Lew (Grass Widow). The clip is another 16mm winner from Lew, who has also done recent videos for Hunx, Shannon and the Clams, Rat Columns and others. As you'll see, "Mansion" finds The Mallard hanging out and playing on Mare Island, and the song's insistent melody is visually accented by broken glass, broken eggs, and broken windows. It makes me want to spin Yes on Blood [...]
