Mixtape: Things You May Have Missed Earlier This Year (Podcast #280)

Mixtape: Things You May Have Missed Earlier This Year (Podcast #280) Words by Ben Van Houten When it was pitched, this episode was known informally as an "underrated bands" mix, a label that seems as unworkable as it feels insulting. In an age of increasing access to an perpetually growing volume of music, and a culture that focuses on always keeping an eye out for the next big thing, the idea that any band could hold any attention long enough to be over-/under-/rated at all seems unlikely. Forget ratings and rankings: just remembering what you like can be a challenge [...]

Photos: Sea of Bees, Sonny + the Sunsets, more perform at Huichica Music Festival 6/2/12

Photos and review by Lauren Sloss and Jackie Andrews Saturday's Huichica Music Festival at the Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma was a seemingly impossible combination of factors. A beautiful setting! Smiling, happy people! Good wine and food at the ready! An incredible musical line-up! 80-degree weather! Owls! Please forgive the excessive use of exclamation points — it was just that kind of a day. The festival, with its chill crowd, two small stages, and easy accessibility to performances, inspires a kind of rabid enthusiasm that even the most jaded city dweller can't help but give in to (and did I [...]

Live This Month: May 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #278) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. It seems we're in a "when it rains, it pours" sort of place for significant new local albums, and this mix only scratches the surface of the latest in Bay Area records, with songs from Ty Segall & White Fence, Sleepy Sun, Whirr, and Blasted Canyons. On the touring front, Herman Dune and Royal Headache crossed different oceans to [...]

Moshi Audio launches the monthly Artist's Living Room Series tomorrow: Release the Sunbird, Emily Jane White

On Wednesday night, Moshi Audio launches the monthly Artist's Living Room Series at the Guerrero Gallery. The free event is described as something of a VH1 Storytellers for the indie set, featuring performances by and conversations with talented independent artists in an intimate setting. It's the sort of series that would work best with charming, thoughtful performers, and the organizers picked a dynamite pairing for tomorrow night in Release the Sunbird and Emily Jane White. If this sounds good to you, you can RSVP over at Do415 or by emailing RSVP[at]moshicorp[dot]com.

Mixtape: Checking Out New Bay Area Hip Hop (Podcast #277)

Mixtape: Checking Out New Bay Area Hip Hop (Podcast #277) Words by Ben Van Houten We haven't written a lot about hip hop for The Bay Bridged. Not for a lack of interest, mind you, but because I've never really felt like we had a real handle on emerging local stuff. Sure, we could write about how great E-40 is with our eyes closed, but do you need someone else telling you how great E-40 is? (If you do, then here's a tip: pick up all three volumes of The Block Brochure. You won't be disappointed. Seriously, it's nuts how [...]
