Vivian Girls are decisively focused on the future. Having an eight-year gap between albums — and having been the subject of indie misogyny from both critics and listeners alike before those stories were given even a fraction of their due — one might imagine a hesitant re-entry to a scene that had such a vitriolic reaction to their very existence.

Vivian Girls' re-emergence, however, has been anything but timid. Indeed, perhaps calling it a re-emergence is unfair, as Katy Goodman, Ali Koehler, and lead singer Cassie Ramone were all actively creating music in one shape or another. The energy surrounding the return isn’t about a comeback — it’s about a continuation, picking up where they left off.

“Sick” is the first single off Vivian Girls' forthcoming album Memory, slated for release September 20, 2019. Punchy, meandering basslines characteristic of post punk are recontextualized among light, layered vocals and a soft, heavily saturated guitar. The edge to their sound and the rawness of the recordings which set them apart from their contemporaries in the late aughts continues to set them apart today. These sonic characteristics emphasize the unapologetically forward and bold lyrics found on “Sick,” touching on themes of abuse and gaslighting. The most striking moment on the track, the transition into the chorus, marks an abrupt shift in tone. What was once a bright-yet-grainy photograph briefly morphs into something more sinister, as Ramone snarls “no” and the rest of the band sinks around her.

Along with Memory, Vivian Girls announced a tour later this year. Check below for details.
