Wayne Wallace

Friday June 7, native San Franciscan trombonist Wayne Wallace and his Grammy-nominated Wayne Wallace Jazz Quintet released their new album The Rhythm of Invention (Patois Records). Led by trombonist and Afro-Caribbean scholar Wayne Wallace, the collection of Latin jazz fusion is married with spoken word that is both mesmerizing and thought-provoking. In "The Rhythm of Invention," the inflection in the speaker’s voice pairs beautifully with the beat. As he says:

Every beat has just as much importance as every other beat
Countless layers of rhythm, piled one on top of the other

The quintet features Wallace with pianist Murray Low, bassist David Belove, Colin Douglas on trap drums, and Michael Spiro on congas/percussion. They’ll be playing at Filoli on Sunday June 9, and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento on Thursday July 25. Sit back and let the tunes move you.
