In a press release circulated this morning, San Francisco concert venue Mezzanine announced it will cease operations in October of next year.

Mezzanine joins venues like Hemlock Tavern and Elbo Room in being forced to close in recent years to make way for (take a wild guess) commercial space or luxury condos. Since 2003, Mezzanine has been an indispensable first step for countless artists on the rise as they pass through San Francisco, from Lady Gaga to Florence Welch. Mezzanine also stands out in that it's one of the last independently owned venues in the city, and the largest woman-owned venue in San Francisco.

The good news is there are lots of great shows, as always, on the horizon for Mezzanine. Stop by for the Knocks and Sweater Beats on New Year's, Reggie Watts' new partnership Wajada during Sketchfest, and a "Sweet Sixteen" blowout with a to-be-announced lineup.
