For the last few years, a bulk of Pinole rapper P-Lo’s portfolio rests on playing behind the boards for HBK Gang and the occasional out-of-towner (think YG, Yo Gotti). His bouncy, high-energy slappers earned him the rep as the go-to guy for hyphy preservation, but for his upcoming solo project, More Than Anything, he aims to show the world he’s more than capable of breaking out of that mold.
On “Always,” the first single off of the album, Lo and Berkeley artist Rexx Life Raj vent their relationship frustrations. Constant fighting, playing games, and trust issues run the boo-thang gamut: “It was all good just a week ago / Now you’re going through my phone and I don’t even know.” Drip-drop percussion and background vocal washes arranged by Cal-A give the song a melancholy feel, offering a taste of Lo’s evolution as an artist on More Than Anything.
