San Francisco resident John McBain has been on the fringe of rock-and-roll royalty for much of his career. He was a founding member of Monster Magnet, collaborated with Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron in Wellwater Conspiracy, and was a member of Queens of the Stone Age for their first three gigs after participating in Josh Homme's Desert Sessions, in addition to a variety of collaborations with lesser-known artists.
February 24, one of our favorite local labels, Vacant Stare Records, will release McBain's Accidental Soundtracks Vol. 1: The Alpha Particle, on VHS. (Yes, VHS). McBain has been in his studio combining his psych-influenced instrumentals with found footage to create 16 music videos for a rare analog experience. Get your first taste of his acreation below with the video for "First Earth Battalion", the 9th song on the album, and stream or purchase on Vacant Stare's Bandcamp. Vacant Stare's Rob Miller has told me there are literally only 25 VHS cassettes of the release available, so you might not want to sleep on this if you like what you see.
