Polica

A year after releasing the violent yet celebratory and bittersweet debut album Give You the GhostPoliça has transformed from a Minneapolis-based bedroom project to an internationally renowned and respected band. Bearing the torch for those select acts who have mastered the art of appropriate auto-tune, the band is led by front-woman Channy Leaneagh, an artist more than capable of carrying beautiful melodies without the help of technology (Roma Di Luna fans will back me up on this one). Instead of using a vocal processor as a crutch, she uses one to transform her voice into an instrument that fills out the band’s soundscape with riffs, licks and solos as a guitar would, essentially eliminating the need for a guitarist and delivering another blow to the “Death of Auto-Tune” team. Complete with a bassist and two drummers whose interplay injects a welcome dose of rock into its songs, Polica creates post punk-flavored indie R&B that is powerful and vulnerable, sexy and full of sorrow all at the same time.

A live show is often the best way to fully appreciate a band’s music and dynamic, and this generalization could not be more accurate for Poliça. To watch drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson battling it out with excessive rim tapping and cross sticking beats, and to witness Channy contort her body along with the music, dominating the stage with infectious energy despite her tiny frame, is to understand what makes this project special. If you haven’t had a chance to catch this band live, check the tour dates below to see if Poliça is stopping in your city between performances at high-profile gigs including Coachella and New York City’s Governor’s Ball. Local shows include stops at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz on April 10th and the Mezzanine in SF on April 13th. For now, enjoy the recently released live video of “Dark Star,” a stand-out track on the band’s 2012 album.
