Bare Wires

Warm Soda – the new project from Easy Bay denizen, Tennessee native, and former Bare Wires frontman Matthew Melton (above, far right) – recently released its first full-length Someone For You via Castle Face Records. After his old band’s dissolution last spring, Melton teamed up Rob Good (above, second from left) to start Fuzz City (both the label and and the East Oakland studio), and he eventually recruited Good for his new venture, along with drummer Ian McBrayer (above, far left) and bassist Chase Oren (above, second from right). The result is a sound that is raw, but not too raw – no, it’s got just the right amount of that dirty, garage rock feel.

“Rob is responsible for much of the recording finesse and incredible guitar work on Someone For You, and I could not have done it without him,” Melton recently told me over email. “I recorded most of the Bare Wires stuff by myself in bedrooms and basements, so now in a more proper space with better tools, we’re putting more into the production and recording process, but not too much more, so the final product ends up landing in that sweet ‘mid-fi’ zone.”

That perfectly sweet “mid-fi” zone is evident on the album’s first single, “Waiting For Your Call.” It’s a Strokes-influenced beauty with a driving pace and the expected injection of fuzzed out guitars. Listen below:

If the rest of the year is anything like how it’s gone so far, 2013 should prove to be a busy year for the members of Warm Soda. In addition to a grueling three months of shows that kicks off with a headlining gig this Friday, February 1st at the Hemlock (with Cocktails and DSTVV opening) and a lengthy run at SXSW, Melton and Good will continue to run their studio and label. Melton told me, “It’s great to have Fuzz City Records up and running now because it gives us a chance to put out bands that we think are cool.” Thus far, the label has released efforts by the likes of Burnt Ones, Adam Widener, and Dirty Cupcakes, plus they put together the fantastic Summer of Fuzz compilation – so we couldn’t agree more with Melton’s assessment of his own roster.

Grab a copy of Someone For You on Castle Face’s website (unfortunately, the “translucent electric blue with rainbow splatter” vinyl is sold out right now, so you’re stuck with black – although Melton said they may do something cool for the next pressing), and then check out full details on Warm Soda’s tour and upcoming Bay Area gigs below.
