The flyer says it all. One of the most iconic music documentaries in history, Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz, will get the Bay Area tribute treatment on November 24th at The Warfield with an incredible cast of musicians, actors, and actresses. To anyone unfamiliar, The Last Waltz chronicles pioneering classic rock group The Band and their final live performance as a quintet, which included guest spots by some of the biggest names in music at the time - including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, and many others (full list here).
November 24th's event is being dubbed "The Complete Last Waltz," and while we only have the flyer and ticket link to work off of at the moment, there's enough information to know this will be a special (and surprisingly fair priced) night. Those set to perform include Cass McCombs, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Sam Cohen, and Scott Metzger, along with unspecified "members of" Dr. Dog, Ween, Gomez, Nada Surf, The Submarines, The Lonely Forest, and The Antibalas Horns. Additionally, there will be spoken performances by cast members of Mad Men, Two Broke Girls, and Man Of Steel. Tickets are on sale now here.
April 19, 2012 saw the passing of Band drummer and singer Levon Helm, resulting in a wave of tribute nights across the globe in the man's honor ever since. We can't help but think this night at The Warfield is in part a tip of the cap to Helm as well. Watch him get the vocals going in this clip from The Last Waltz, as a slew of talent performs one of the The Band's most famous tunes, "The Weight."
