Spencer Owen of Oakland recently released an LP entitled End Vogue. Co-produced by Drew Stoeckel of James Rabbit, the album has a bit of a serious tone, but the songs are just too much fun to ever get you down. "The overall direction of the project was inspired by a recent trip to Florida to visit EPCOT and also Celebration," says Owen, describing his process for creating the album. "The lyrics are critical examinations of consumer culture, middle-class lifestyle, nonplaces and utopian superstructures (among other things). Hilarious, right?"

Below, you can listen to "My Troubled Past" from End Vogue, a track that takes a sample of Lace's "I'm a Gambler", speeds it up, and puts it over an afro-pop rhythm. Then, after the jump, be sure to watch Owen's delightfully wacky video for "Water Drinkers", which was directed by his brother Alec, and get full details on Owen's upcoming Bay Area shows.

Owen performs at solo gigs "with an iPod, a melodica and a sparkling sweater" since he first played his first show in 2003 (which happened to be with Ariel Pink). He recently put together a band that will be backing him on most future appearances, however. Owen changes the band's name slightly for every show, but he assures me it's the same lineup every time. See his upcoming dates below.
